INFINITY is not through yet … but really, can anything infinite ever really end and if so where? But is time circular? And do we all end up just where we started? If I had the opportunity to live my life over again what would I change? Sincerely, I’ve reached an age where I can say I don’t regret any of the albums I’ve released these past 52 years because for better or worse each album is finally a testament of where I was at that particular moment in my life both creatively and personally. As the ancient Romans like to say, Audere est faucere (to dare is to do) and isn’t that what rock ‘n roll is all about? Has there ever been another genre of music that took so many chances?
Well, getting away from the metaphysical for a moment, the Elliott Murphy version of INFINITY is perhaps more finite than we imagined. In fact, we’re close to selling out all the INFINITY CDs still in stock and I want to sincerely thank everyone who reached out via the site or show and brought one home with them. But the big news is that now we’re moving on to the next stage of this particular musical voyage and the 33rpm Vinyl LP version of INFINITY will be released on Friday 6 June. That was always the plan from the get-go because, in my humble opinion at least, there’s always been this awkward mismatch between the CD and LP version of the same album. Technically, a CD can hold up to something like 72 minutes of music whereas on a 33 rpm LP the optimum length for maximum sound fidelity for each side is about 15 minutes. So when planning INFINITY I took as my role model the Beatles Help album which is just about the same length and also contains my favorite Beatles song, “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away.”
Also, Help has a one word album title as did my first album Aquashow which was an homage to the memory of my late father’s show of the same name. But think about how many monumental albums have had one word titles: Dylan’s Desire and Infidels, the Stone’s Aftermath, Nirvana’s Nevermind, both Metallica’s Load and Reload and of course, Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska. Need I say more?
Just finished the first leg of the INFINITY tour (although that seems a contradiction in terms) which took me and the amazingly versatile Murphyland Band (guitarist Olivier Durand, percussionist Alan Fatras & violinist Melissa Cox) to Belgium, France, Spain and finally onboard the enormous cruise ship Fantasia which sailed from Genoa to Barcelona to Marseille and back for the “Born to Cruise” event. What a trip … literally!
But in my case one tour just keeps flowing into another and one album’s last track leads to the opening song on the next and I’m already writing the songs for that whatever that may be. Tentative title is Mirror …
A highlight of the tour as always were our two nights at Paris’ legendary New Morning club for my “Birthday Shows” and so we’re planning on returning on Sunday 28 September for a “back to school” special.
