“Trying to Be Cool” came about when Elliott recorded a loop on the church organ in his wife’s hometown of Chalmazel (I’ve been there!) and worked it into a song. “The Tree of Life” was inspired by the same tree that Elliott is sitting under on the cover. That amazing tree was in the town of Gruchet-Saint-Siméon in the Normandy region of France where Elliott stayed for a few weeks after shooting the video of “Night Surfing” with his long-time guitarist Olivier Durand in nearby Le Havre. It was a productive stay (Elliott thinks the tree had special powers) and he claims he wrote about a dozen songs while there. The plan is to release The Tree of Life Part II in December which should include “Youth” and “Jumbo” as well as “Daylight” and “American Vagabond” … but we’ll see what happens when that tree sheds its leaves.
