In November 1998 a small French publishing company located in Rouen called Derrière la Salle de Bains released a very limited edition French language version of Elliott’s short story “The Red General” as Notes From A Spanish Café. A small paperback 28 page booklet (4″ by 5.8″) it came with a simple jacket that folded over in the front and back. Derrière la Salle de Bains, similar to some ways as the famous U.S. publisher City Lights, always released small books this size, often times by famous Beat authors. Nicolas Mauriac did the translation from English to French. A couple of small illustrations from old children’s school books were used on the cover and the front page.
We’ve scanned the entire 32 page booklet and uploaded it to the Elliott Murphy website where you can download and read it as a PDF document.
